Hand Plane Sharpening/Tuning/Flattening Service

Hand Plane Sharpening/Tuning/Flattening Service

A frustrating element of getting started in hand tool woodworking is learning how to sharpen and fine tune a handplane. Regardless of whether you are buying a hand plane vintage or new, they will likely need to be "tuned up." This involves grinding/honing/polishing the blade, flattening the sole, and some other elements that will take a low performing hand plane into one that will take the thinnest and finest shavings. This service will offer one of the three options:

-Blade Sharpening - Send us your hand plane blade/chip breaker. This service involves hollow grinding the primary bevel to 25 degrees (done on an 8" low speed CBN grinding wheel), honing to 30 degrees, and polishing away any burrs.

-Sharpening/Tuning - Send us your entire hand plane. This service involves grinding, honing, and polishing your blade, then setting up your plane to take fine shavings. The plane will be sent back and all the individual will have to do is advance the blade forward to take fine shavings (the blade will likely still have to be adjusted laterally, simply because of the shipment process).

-Flattening/Sharpening/Tuning - Send us your entire hand plane. This service also adds the option of flattening the sole of your hand plane by using a flat surface plate.

Note: This is not a hand plane restoration service. I do not remove rust, fix handles, or replace parts. This service is for servicable hand planes.
